Fordingbridge Turks Football Club

Fordingbridge Turks Football Club

One of Hampshire’s longest-standing amateur football clubs operates from the heart of Fordingbridge, offering opportunities across multiple age groups and abilities. Fordingbridge Turks Football Club traces its origins to 1868, placing it among England’s earliest associations and as a founding member of the Hampshire Football Association.

The club’s distinctive name draws from admiration for the resilience displayed by Ottoman forces during the 1877 Siege of Plevna, a connection that underscores its historical depth. Early matches consisted of friendlies, followed by participation in regional cups. Notable achievements include retaining a Basingstoke Cup in the late 19th century and later competing in leagues such as the Hampshire League and Bournemouth divisions.

Today, the club fields senior men’s teams, including a first team in the Southampton League Premier Division and reserves focused on player development.

Youth sections encompass mini teams for beginners, progressing to competitive youth sides, with over 14 teams in total. Walking football provides an option for those preferring a non-contact format, while volunteer coaches support skill-building in an inclusive setting.

Facilities include pitches at the Recreation Ground and access to modern surfaces at local schools. The club emphasises community involvement, run entirely by volunteers with more than 250 members spanning youth to veterans.

Former player Frank Jefferis progressed from the Turks to represent Southampton, Everton, and England, illustrating pathways for talent. The clubhouse displays memorabilia reflecting this enduring legacy.

Fordingbridge Turks continues to prioritise participation and development, maintaining continuous play since its inception.
