Woodgreen Community Shop & Post Office
The community-owned Woodgreen Community Shop serves the village of Woodgreen on the northern edge of the New Forest, three miles from Fordingbridge. This enterprise combines a general store, post office, and café facilities, all under volunteer and staff management.
The shop originated from efforts to preserve local services. Facing closure in 2006, villagers formed the Woodgreen Community Shop Association, acquiring the lease through shares and donations. This allowed continued operation in temporary premises while funds were raised for a permanent building. A new structure opened in 2011, designed with modern features and ample adjacent parking.
Stock focuses on everyday essentials alongside regional items.
Over sixty local suppliers contribute, with a quarter of produce sourced within thirty miles. Meats come from nearby farms, including pork and poultry from Hale, beef when available from local herds, and occasional lamb. Bakeries in Fordingbridge, Wimborne, and Ringwood supply bread and pastries.
Honey, fudge, and chocolates from producers close by add to the selection. Wines span international choices with discounts on selected lines, while beers feature ales from Ringwood, Downton, and Hopback breweries.
The integrated post office handles postal services, bill payments, currency exchange, cheque deposits, and parcel collections. It functions as an Amazon collection point and sells National Lottery products.
Tea and coffee are available with indoor and outdoor seating for refreshments. Cakes and other treats complement the drinks. The shop also acts as a New Forest information point, stocking maps, brochures, and details on area activities.
Handmade crafts and gifts from local artisans, including cards, woodwork, textiles, and ceramics, provide additional options. Newspapers, greetings cards, and frozen items round out the range.
